Dumb Blonde Stereotype--Myth or Fact

The Dumb Blonde Stereotype
Being a natural blonde, I have always taken somewhat an affront to the dumb blonde stereotype. If you're a blonde reading this you're probably thinking, "Me too!" and if you're of another hair color you might possibly be thinking, "Well I know quite a few blondes who could fall into that category!" I'll admit that I do as well, but no more than dumb brunettes.
DISCLAIMER: This is an opinion piece based on theories I have heard and personal experience, not something published in an academic journal. If you want sources, go to the references I list at the end of the article or do your own research, but I wouldn't use this article as a reference for a school paper unless you want your teacher thinking you are some dumb blonde.
History
First of all, let's take a little look at where this whole "dumb blonde" idea comes from. One theory is that the ancient Greeks and Romans so admired their flaxen-haired neighbors to the north, they would bleach their hair to make it blonde. Seeing as they didn't exactly have the health standards we have today, a considerable amount of bleach repeatedly placed on the scalp and being inhaled could have some effect on one's mental status.
Another theory is that in the Middle Ages, while the lords and ladies pranced around and shaded their delicate features, common people worked outdoors in the fields and became tanned and their hair grew lighter. As the lower classes didn't usually have a formal education, tan skin and blonde hair became associated with unintelligent, lower class people.
Then there is the ever famous book by Anita Loos (that sounds like a made up name) and the movie based upon it, Gentlemen Prefer Blondes, starring Marilyn Monroe. Released in 1953, this story about two showgirls-a clueless blonde and a sassy brunette. While perhaps highlighting the "fun" side of blondes (in fact, brunette women held a demonstration protesting the movie, showing that brunettes could be just as much fun), this certainly did nothing to showcase their intelligence.
Nature, Nurture, or Nonsense
The color of one's hair is determined by either a gene, or a choice to make a chemical alteration to the color. Does that one gene, or whatever gene we have that makes us gravitate toward blonde-ness also affect intellectual capacity? Genetically, it doesn't appear to be that way.
Let's look at another reason people may suspect blondes of being inherently empty headed. Often children are born with or grow to have blonde hair. Tow-headed is a term usually referring to children, and invokes a sweet sort of innocence. Even those who have light brown hair but play outside often usually have hair that turns blonde in the summertime. We think of those children as naive, cute, and playful, and treating them in such a manner may overlap to the treatment of blondes. I for one can't count the number of times I've been spoken to in a near baby-voice by auto mechanics or when I'm shopping in Home Depot. I always want to respond with something to the tune of, "Yes I know what a chassis is and if you speak to me in that tone one more time I'll give you a first hand look at it when I drive over you!"
Blondes Make Men Dumb?
What is interesting is a study has come out from the University of Paris X-Nanterre that shows that after exposure to blonde women, men performed worse on general knowledge tests. They concluded that the men subconsciously mimicked the dumb blonde stereotype presented before them.
So now we have some history of the dumb blonde--dark headed Greeks and Romans trying to be blonde--and a study showing not that blondes are dumb, but rather make other people dumb....interesting.
And a quick side note--why is it that when people hear "blonde" or "brunette" or "redhead" they envision women? For a bit of reference (and perhaps defense), the person with the highest IQ in the world is a woman--Marilyn vos Savant. A brunette, yes, but then interestingly enough many people argue Hillary Clinton is the world's smartest woman, and she is a blonde. Just some food for thought...
A Look at International Standards
While there might not be a whole lot of research on the IQ status of blondes vs. brunettes in the scientific world, there are some interesting studies done every few years to see what countries have "the smartest" kids. The Programme for International Student Assessment (PISA) conducts a test of 15-year-old children around the world every three years to compare student performance. This past year, Finland scored the highest. Yes, Taiwan and South Korea were up there too, but so interesting that the Nordic, blonde-haired Finnish kids scored the highest.
Conclusion
So, to sum things up, there are all types of smart people and dumb people. Your intelligence is not determined by the fact that you spent too much time outside last summer, felt like trying something new at the hair salon, or were born with a gene that gave you blonde hair. Intelligence is a fluid thing, always changing, always able to be used or neglected. So here's to all hair colors, even though everyone knows that blondes still have more fun...just kidding.

I'm a natural blonde and I often have to deal with blonde jokes. I hear them so much that I have actually avoided asking questions in fear that who I'm asking might put me in the "Dumb blonde" category.
I've gone from putting up with the stereotype to getting angry about it, and this article really helped me. Knowing the history somehow makes it less annoying!
Thanks!
Interesting read. I always have thought the dumb blonde comment wasn't fair or truthful!
I thought this was a good article, and i agreed with pretty much everything you said.
But, were you being ironic when you misspelled 'interesting'...?
"What is intersting is a study has come out from the University of Paris X-Nanterre"
you missed out an 'e'. i'm not trying to sound rude, just pointing it out.
from a blonde.
Ya know, I've met a lot of blondes (women and men) in my life, and most of them were pretty darn smart. I don't think I've ever met one who fit the stereotype of a "dumb blonde." I was blonde when I was a baby, and get quite blonde in the sun -- but I'm old, and invisible, so what does it matter?
Great hub, thanks!
i'm writing a paper on this, but i can't find creditble sources any where for the medival theory. Where did you hear about it?
I am actually writing a paper on this also and cannot find credible sources! This article and Wikipedia are the only site containing this information that I would like to use in my paper!
Yes , people these days want to put a label on everything .
I think that it can be true but not always
OK you know what i love you. every day i get called a dumb blond and it is really anoying... even though i can act blond i am..... can be very smart so ya thnak you know i can go around and tell cool facts about blonds and make burunetts jelous :)
ya wellyou know whattt kellly blonds have their times so being dumb.............like you!!!!=D
heyy this is kelly again when i last wrote to you i kinda spelt thank's wrong but i was typing fast so ya i am not dumb mahahahahaha-----lol love it
The thing about blondes making men dumber than they are might have some truth in it. I was talking to a lovely long haired blonde a few months back at a bus stop and suddenly realised I was acting a bit "dumb" myself. Led me to reconsider the stereotype image, particularly as many blondes I have met are actually highly intelligent people. Nothing wrong however in an occasional laugh about the stereotype blonde image though :-)
great hub. very interesting, I learned quite a bit.
I think its dunb to think that blondes are dumb i know a few dumb brunettes ... lol
well, looking at the history of those people trying to bleach their hair to be blonde only brings me to one conclusion... they are jealous. this article is pretty much saying that. this article to me sums up that people are jealous of blondes. Brunettes (an others) are just jealous of blondes. Think about this... who are really the dumb ones? brunettes who dye their hair blonde wanting to be blonde? or natural blondes?
if u ask me those who dye their hair blonde are dumb.
I am blond (with a yellowish tint in my hair).
I have never considered blondes being somehow different to the others. I still do not understand people who say: You are blonde, wow! Moreover, the fact that blonde women are thought to be superior to other women seems to be offensive to me.
Real beauty is not in the hair colour - it is more in the stature, features of face, manner... the hair quality, if you want, but not it's colour.
As for mental abilities, they have never depended from physical characteristics.
By the way, I come from Ukraine, where many people have blonde hair, and I know some girls who dye their hair dark though they are natural blondes (just to experiment, or to look different, for example)
Totally stereotypical.
I have met many blonde people that would make your head spin with their intellect. Serious.
In my experience, women who DYE their hair blonde are dumb.
I have no problem with NATURAL blondes. Actually, many of the naturally blonde women I know are smart.
Defineately a stereotype. I know a lot of blonde people who are really smart! Everyone thinks I'm blonde but my hair is light brown and it turns lighter in the sun. I'm not against blondes, I'm just saying that light brown hair would not be classified as blonde.
With a name like Heidi and having blonde hair, I wouldnt ask a quetion either. Sure blondes are the inferior species; Im blonde and Ive learned to deal with it. Have fun! Drink booze!
I absolutely love this hub! Its about time some one stood up for us!! I'm a natural blonde and everyone calls me dumb at school....... but when we get in class, they all ask me for answers!!! Especailly the blonde wanna be's.... and the brunetts to!!!:)))))
This stereotype applies to fake blondes, its unfortunate that in their jealousy they had to ruin our reputation.
It's interesting to note that the same people who have no problem denigrating blondes are usually the first to scream, "Racism!" and "Prejudice!" if some one pokes fun at Asians, blacks, or other non-whites. Just another symptom of the current anti-white feeling permeating the West. Now, I'm going to go over to Stormfront, kick back, and relax. That's one place where I don't have to put up with anti-white prejudice.
It's funny, as a child I tended to view most blondes as above average in intelligence rather than dumb. I still continue to do so, especially since my view have been confirmed in personal experience again and again. Not saying all blondes are smart, but I surely met a lot of them that are. . .
blonds are not dumb i am blond and im no dumb
WHEN WAS THIS ARTOCLE WRITTEN???????
I AM CITING IT AND NEED TO KNOW.
i'm doing a speech on how the saying dumb blond should be banned. i found that this site was very useful. i hate the fact that because your blond everyone asumes your thick even if you are i top set for all your classes and yet they always coppie your work or ask you for help. it dosn't reaaly seem fair to critisize and then expect help
Hey, great article, sometimes I wonder if I'm the only one who is feeling this way. I've always been blonde one way or another. When I was young I was almost see through blonde but now I'm almost light brown. I've actually always been teased about my hair, yet I've always felt as though I was smarter than they were. Even if I have met a dumb blonde, I've always found a lot of them to be very kind people. Why, then have this be such a widely known stereotype then? I am surprised though that you didn't bring up the hollywood actress playing up the "Dumb blonde/ barbie" sterotype. Paris Hilton and Heidi Montag are two very good examples. Great article though!
Thank you for the article. i have printed it out and anouced it on our school annoucements! thanks to the article the 'dumb blonde' jokes have come to an end at my school!!!! woo!
Lexi
Okay Joanna, please note that the author of this article IS a blonde and i extremely doubt that she was being ironic on purpose.
like you say ''not trying to be rude, just pointing out.''
hahahahaha, again here i am. i just need to know the date you posted this. you know, to show my school......to prove i didnt make it...........ttyl! reply asap!
Thanks this information helped me alot as i am doing a speech at school on why people discriminate blondes and this site is one of the only sites i could find for information. Thanks heaps
I’m a natural blond and really appreciate your article. I really tired of people referring to blonds as being dumb. I think this could be considered a form of bullying, especially in a school. I don’t know why people think it is okay to make these comments, because it is an insult.
Another comment I hear is “I was having a blond moment”. I hear this comment at work many times, and it makes me angry. The lady that makes this comment is a brunette, and overweight. If I believed in stereotypes, I could say to her, “you are lazy because you are fat”.
I always thought this started in Hollywood, and the women they were talking about were brunettes with bleached hair.
I know a few blondes that are really smart, btw.
I have dated blondes and its 50/50. I have dated blondes that are total airheads, but I have also dated blondes that were very intelligence. I have also dated brunettes that were airheads as well. I think it's just a myth that got carried away to far.
I remember having the theory about this, in that it's really the women that dye their hair blond over a long period of time, and with that time with constant BLEACH going into the skin, it can ruin braincell structure to a degree.
Now, this is not proven, but it was the only logical theory I could come up with on my own.
I'm brunette, yes: jet black hair! And I am disgusted with people that put down real blonds like this. I do not like anyone being stereotyped! We are individuals! We are not mentally connected to those who happen to be closest to us on a genetic basis. We're much more effected by our environment and/or culture than we are by sheer difference in genetics. Not one group of humans are naturally "dumber", smarter, more violent, etc. It's way more about our environment.
I do not even like positive stereotypes! I do not want women looking at me and thinking "Wow, he must be great in bed, since he looks Latin! 'Tall, dark and handsome!'" "Oh, he looks Latin, so he must dance great!" "Oh, he looks Latin so must speak Spanish/Italian". STOP THAT! lol!
Now, I'm straight and all, I am sexually attracted to women only, but even beyond the positive stereotyping, I want women to view me as an individual, not apart of a group on a mental scale! Sometimes it truly is easy to judge a book by its cover, but we should attempt to get away from this and judge each individual by their own character, not by their color - whether color of hair, skin, eyes, etc.
As for her typo: EVERYONE makes typos! Only the most pathetic of 'colorist' bullies would actually try to continue such dumb stereotype as "blonds are dumb" simply because someone made a typo and she happens to be blond. If she was brunette, the typo would not be harped upon! It only proves that people with weak minds easily give into, and even almost want to FORCE stereotypes on people! Arg!
;-)
Dumb blondes are brunettes who dye their hair, do you think I'm a true blonde?
The truth is that most "dumb blondes" are actually just dumb brunettes who thought life would be better as a bleached blonde! How many real blondes there are on the planet would make another dumb study!
Great article! :)
Well about the first theory about brunettes bleaching their hair, if it were true it really wouldn't be the blondes that were the dumb ones because we weren't stupid enough to give ourselves brain damage by bleaching our hair, so I think it should be dumb brunettes not blondes.
How can you spell mimicked incorrectly when talking about men taking general knowledge tests.
Bravo. I love this article. And it's so true too. Myself, being a natural golden blonde girl, get teased constantly for my hair color. Most of it comes from the "It" girls in school who are all conveniently brunettes (well, one's a redhead). Everytime I'm referred to in a baby voice, I feel like punching their lights out. But instead, I prove my intelligence by chatting about things such as politics, literature, and art. Most people are genuinely surprised with my responses, and it does me good to know that I've bested them.
But yes, it does happen a lot, and quite frankly, I'm sick of it. If I weren't half as lady-like and respectful as I am, I'd resort to their stereotypes. But I'd never stoop to their level. If you think about it, they're the ones actually being stupid by telling their petty jokes, not the blondes that they're told about.
That picture of the young woman holding that anti-war sign was photoshopped (probably by a pro-war brunette) to try and discredit her. Nice try whoever did it but you did not fool me. If blonde is such a bad thing then why do so many brunettes spend so much money and time to have fake blonde hair? I have even seen African American women wearing blonde wigs LOL.
hi im a 12 year old girl brunette and my best friend is a blonde (natural), and she gets negative comments because of her hair all the time and i think its horrible cus she is really smart! and there are plenty of other colored hair girls and bos that are just as stupid. but ali, thats just mean that ur saying it should be dumb brunettes because thats like saying dumb blondes.
peace,
joey
o yeah and that picture is totally photoshoped, i mean siriously, i know a thing or 2 about photoshopping :p
Just to add to the discussion, there might be another origin for the dumb blonde myth. The basis for it may be from a rare condition in humans called phenylketonuria, which is caused by a gene that affects multiple phenotypes or traits. Having this condition often causes mental impairment AND the same gene also affects the colouration of the patient's skin, hair, eyes, etc. So, most people affected with this condition usually have light brown or blonde hair, light coloured eyes, and so on.
Again, I have to say this is just one possibility of the origin of the myth. It is very RARE and should NOT be taken as any kind of proof of the myth.
I definitely do not agree with this or any other stereotypes out there. I've met intelligent people with red, black, blonde, white and brown hair.
Also, there might be self-fulfilling prophecy at play in some people that may have increased the prevalence of the myth. It basically means that if you think something, you will subconsciously start acting that way, thereby fulfilling your initial belief.
So if you hear from others that you are not as smart as others due to your hair colour, skin colour or whatever else, and you start to believe it, you may subconsciously start acting that way, further adding to your original belief.
So to all the people that said they get bullied or teased about something, just know that all the myths and stereotypes out there are just that and don't let it change how you see yourself!
I was suprised looking through this window, but I can say that all mankind created withe same folder, I mean we have same montal abilities whitch could devlopped, the food we eat, the mean we live and family education.... all have an inpact on our thinking so! not unly the blonde could be dumb, the one thing is deffirente between people is the degreet of intelligence witch is under gen, skin color or hiar color isn't reference
As you can see from my name, I am a natural blonde who gets highlights in the winter because my hair darkens up. I hate blonde jokes! I'm one of the smartest girls in my class but everyone calls me "the dumb blonde". Today i was reading the comments of a youtube video and two people were in a fight. The one jerk said "your probably a dumb blonde that listens to justin bieber and lady gaga who spends all her time twittering in starbucks while she counts the calories in her water". And to make it worse, the girl responded with "I'm not blonde at all and i don't listen to justin bieber or lady gaga". You see the stereotypes?! I like to think the guys just pissed off cuz he couldn't get a blonde and the girl is jealous cuz she isn't one. Blonde pride, people!
well..I'm not blond... I'm black and have dark brown hair..lol but I do get angry when I hear "dumb blond" jokes. It bothers me, in fact, all stereotypes bother me.. :/ I try not to stereotype people because I hate being stereotyped. I'm black and I don't like people assuming I'm "ghetto" or "rude" etc.. and I don't think all blonds are dumb , I don't see what the colour of someone's hair has to do with their level of intelligence.
i actually really like this. ive never really found something that says stuff that actually is realistic. i was curious bout were it came from cause my little sister's dad was telling us a blonde joke and i was telling him a bunch that i found on facebook and stuff.
And, this is just a hair color. Now, imagine that your skin color is black.
Please, get a life and don't waste your time. If you think you are getting it bad, just look around you.
o_o. Wow. Im asian and why I was young blonde people made fun of me. I barely say any blonde person get bullied >_> ;
LOL , Woops I was barely looking at what i was typing.
I meant " Wow. I'm asian and when i was young blonde people made fun of me. I barely saw any blonde person get bullied >_> ; " anyways blondes aren't dumb
This "stereotype" is about hair bleachers
i have always been a natural blonde. in school, people would call me "dumb blonde", but then come run to me for answers to their homework questions. i am so NOT a dumb blonde.
i agree, ive never seen a blonde get bullied, weird huh?
i liked the history on your article, it made me feel better about being blonde. so, everyone is jealous of us then?
"dumb blonde" is a myth and a legend. My mother is totally blonde and was an A+ student. And plus, if you guys didn't know, people with fairer complexion are far more susceptible to mercury poisoning, so that could be a reason too. My uncle is totally blonde, German ancestry, but born here, and worked for NASA as a satellite programmer and has a 176 IQ.
But when he was born, they didn't give out tons of vaccinations (which used to contain mercury). Nowadays there is no mercury in vaccinations besides flu shots, but it is still in amalgam fillings (grey teeth fillings). If your mother has amalgam fillings and you're gestating in her, you can suffer brain damage and or get birth defects. This is why most people in the U.S. don't do well in school. Hopefully now that will change. Personally, my mother had four teeth fillings when I was born, and I was poisoned by mercury from 22 vaccinations. So the fact that I'm not Autistic is quite surprising.
when i said "hopefully now that will change", is because right now people are trying to ban the amalgam fillings.
I don't believe this stereotype,but I'm blond,and I have to admit, I do dumdumb things sometimes.
LOL,I did a dumb thing right there! :) Dumdumb, ha.
This was very interesting to read.
I hate dumb blonde jokes. I am a blonde and I have all A's in school.
But what if the dumb blonde stereotype in some way causes dumb blondes? It seems possible- the influence of such statements over the course of a blonde's life may cause them to believe it, and through such belief, a kind of placebo effect is possible. Then of course, if blondes are sexually desirable, perhaps they are inclined to spend more time socializing in school, and this impacts their education? A slight initial impact is all that is needed to feed into a dumb blonde complex created by the aforementioned dumb blonde stereotype, and then they feel less inclined to try and learn, to try and do well in school; what's the use, they're blonde.
What Justin said is true. If any blonde is dumb, it's most likely a result of mercury poisoning. And hey, Stephen Hawking is a natural blonde who can outsmart all of us... What do you have to say about that. =)
This stereotype is so stupid! How would the color of someone's hair possibly affect that person's intelligence? I'm a natural blonde and I have A+'s and A's in all my classes.
I am sat here writing a assingment for stereotyping as i am blonde i thought i would use this as an example. people have always said im thick a dippy. but its me thats going to uni next year, and supports two children on her own who are very clever indeed!!!!!
I am a blond, but I'm not always dumb! I'm only dumb because I have ADHD!
People definitely think of the dyed blonde as dumb and dyed blondes do lose many brain cells to the bleach over time. But it goes deeper than this. The blonde stereotype started with the Romans and Greeks who thought of the nordic types as pretty but dumb. The reason was the northern Europeans were tribal peoples who lived in huts, were uncivilized and made their living from theft. Remember the Vikings? They did not invent muhc, had no fine art, were obviously not intellectual. They were drunken warriors who stole, murdered and plundered. The Romans and Greeks liked the hair, no doubt, but thought of them as dumb and as inferior in intellect. Another word used for the northern tribes was barbarians. It is one of the reason that Hadrian built the wall, to protect England from the Picts who were thought to be like animals.
So this is the reason for the blonde stereotype, but we do not even realize it because the Roman culture is no longer.
My personal experience with blondes is varied. The bleached ones do seem less brainy, but it makes sense because they kill their brain cells with bleach. There are very few real blondes, because most adult women have light blonde hair and dye it. Hillary Clinton for instance is not blonde, she has light blonde hair which basically means that she is a brunette who dyes it. She is very smart but I would not say that she is the world's smartest.
There is another study that states that Mediterranean, Southern European women and Southern Asian have more testosterone and this may mean that they have more sex drive, are more ruthless etc. This may be another reason why real blondes are perceived as soft, maybe because they do not have as much testosterone???
I think that everyone should try to judge everyone individually. Everybody likes blonde hair and the way it looks, but many do really think that the blonde way may not be as tough, smart, brainy or resilient.
As stated before, though, it really is an individual thing and we all should know this in this country. We are taught here to judge people by their individual and not by stereotypes.
Hi, I am a natural blonde too, and I just want to say that I really like the point you are putting forward! I love how you also stick up for blondes and agree that the dumb blonde idea is ridiculous! And I am writing an essay based on similar things and your writing has really given me some more inspiration! Thank you:)
It's odd how people like to define people by the color of their hair.
Red heads are bloody murderers,
Blondes are dumb
Brunettes are smart
Black is either gothic or a criminal mastermind
I'm a natural red head who's got a liking for writing on the darker side but is that really defined by my hair color? I mean cummon! do I really have to dye my hair brunette to get people to stop thinking I'm the grim reaper's apprentice?
People watch too much anime these days. They use hair color to define character alot.
You all are on something...... seriously write soemthing else dude not a comment more of an insult
Love this! I'm a natural blonde, I've learned to just put up with all the jokes over the years, only to baffle them later with how smart I am. I think a lot of people either act dumb around blondes or always treat them like a dumb child. I can't tell you how many times I told people something and they just laugh at me saying 'No Maddy, that's not true' then they find out it's true.
Also some people get so mad at the way redheads are treated, but why not blondes? We're people too.

I've been considering starting a nationwide campaign against blonde stereotyping in the media, movies and everyday life.
My brunette sister made a comment about her daughter (a natural blonde) not having a lot of self confidence. I could only bite my tongue and think to myself "Probably because you allowed her older brother to call her a dumb blonde for the last 15 years."
I'm a natural blonde and have been exposed to all of the jokes. Even my best friends would call me Bimbo, although I know they felt it was a term of endearment.
The problem is that somewhere deep inside my self confidence was slowly being chipped away. I may not be Einstein, but I'm no idiot. My sense of self worth is much lower than it should be. I now believe it's largely because of society allowing the stereotype of the dumb blonde to be exploited for entertainment's sake.
It's not ok to stereotype a Jew as money-hungry or use the derogatory N word, but it's ok to throw in a dumb blonde for a few laughs.
This may sound like a joke, but it's not if you're concerned about your own daughter's self esteem.
Here's my problem with this. Whenever people get steriotyped or joked about in such a manner because of their SKIN color then everybody thinks thats bad because it's "racist", .. . yet it's alright to steriotype and joke about somebody in that way on account of their HAIR color !!
I don't believe IQ's are actually accurate, so no, there isn't a smartest person around, and there never will be.
I am a blonde.and every day ppl call me a dumb blonde they all think I'm so stupid!but here's what I have to say if in such a dumb blonde then y am I in all advanced classes and am on the high honor roll????
I'm blonde and I am at the top of my class:)
strait A's and all!
Blondes are not dumb. Brunettes who dye their hair blonde just because they want to look like Barbie are dumb. It looks fake. I think blondes are really smart. I wish I had blonde hair but I'm a redhead.
Actually everyone; regardless of hair color is dumb at one time or another. In my area, I see many dumb dark haired people. The percentage is higher with dark haired because they're more of them then blondes. I know it's stereotype and most likely prejudice against blondes. I also see now they're putting on tv and in movies dumb dark haired people. Maybe one day this stereotype will diminish. Even geniuses can be dumb. Go figure. Nobody knows it all. I feel if you have a good memory, that will make you seem smart. I feel people who are smart can figure things out without being taught. Learning is what we may remember and it's not a real test for being smart. Speed is helpful but everyone has different speed in figuring things out. Logic is also another part of deciding ones IQ and this is a self figuring out test which is what I mentioned first. Anyone who brings up the dumb blond ridicule, I question their intellect.
one more point you have overlooked which can support the theory of stupid blonds.
Blonds in general are more beautiful, and therfore more worshiped and have more attention from men and the environement. This may lead a blond to focus on his/her looks instead of on their mind leading to lack of knowledge- so someone may think "they know nothing". Uglier people know that if they wont focus on their mind they will not have what to offer. so there you go.
Also, people being judgmental cannot cope with the weekness in the knee they get from looking at beautiful blond women so they have to humiliate them so there is another reson this stereotype arose out of evil comfort.
I've noticed that most of the "dumb blondes" are actually the fake blonde. So in other words the real blondes are smart
I once dyed my hair blonde (I'm naturally brunette) and people would always associated that with my name (Tiffany) and would assume I was just some stupid, blissful skank. I eventually dyed my hair another color and people stopped behaving as if I were stupid. It pissed me off to think that a simple matter of hair color could affect so much.
Ive always kind of ignored it but when the kids bring out the blonde jokes at school I like to mention that I took 9th grade math last year and 10th this year and I'm only in 8th plus I'm one of the top 10 students in a school of 730 students (okay so it is a kindergarten through 8th grade school and this is the last year I can go there but still)
No one actually believes blondes are dumber. its just human nature to find ways of critising others to make your self part of a 'superior' group. Its another basic form of discrimination. Time will cure this, just like time has watered down sexism, racism, ageism... the only people in this world who rarely suffer discrimination are 30-40 something white males with no disabilities, red hair or inperfections. Everyone one else has to fight their corner i'm afraid.
I'm just curious why the dumb ones feel they have to announce they're blonde. They love to talk about it and it's very annoying. Yes, we see that your hair is blonde.
I am a natural blonde. My parents are both brunette and I am the only blonde girl in my family. Growing up my mom made it very clear how she felt about blondes. She doesn't like them. She constantly belittled me when and if I made ANY mistake calling me a "stupid blonde girl". It doesn't help that her second husband cheated on her with a blonde. My dad never made me feel like less for being blonde but he only dates brunettes and I notice this for sure. In grade school/junior high (my school was K-8) the kids definitely put me down for being blonde. I think I was called a dumb blonde every day. Even teachers would make blonde jokes, not directly at me, just general self put-downs when they made a mistake. In high school I remember a boy telling his friend that "all blondes are hott, except for her", meaning me. This was freshman year and it had such a huge impact on me I spent the next four years trying to make myself beautiful instead of trying to succeed in school. My grades were not always the best but that's because socializing, being pretty, and being liked we're more important to me. I ended up going into the beauty industry as a hair stylist, and I think being blonde and being treated the way that I was has a lot to do with it. I have never colored my hair, I'm 23 and I'm still very blonde. I have had brunettes(this includes brunettes that bleach) tell me they are jealous of my hair. I guess the point of me writing about my life experience as a blonde was to make the point that this stereotype needs to die, not only because it's mean, but because my life was shaped due to the ignorance of others. I love being a stylist, and I actually do love being blonde, but I wonder what my life would have been like if I had been brunette. Also, I'd like to add that education does not equal intelligence. The End :)
why dont yall all just stfu it is for fun and we all know that blonds aint stupid. they are dense but we all our. all the jokes are made up for fun.
Blonde is only the hair color. It has nothing to do with intelligence or any other characteristic or quality.
this is to juggalo: You're obviously not blonde and have no idea what it's like. Why are you even reading this? Do you think it's just "fun" to make fun of someone because they are black? It's the same thing. Skin color, hair color, eye color...it's all just colors!! It hurts people when they continually are degraded for something so insignificant so us blondes can say what we want. Please just shut up and go do more meth.
lol erin i like your opinion! im using this article in a health class haha. i'm a natural brunnet... idk if thats how you spell it i take the opi nion the one for being ly truly dumb blondes are those who want 2 be dumb and fit a steriotype. sorry bout my spelling. i've had plenty of predjudic for being "country" from ohio and hair colors has nothing to do with intelligence. just how hard you work to be smart
iam am a natural born blondy and i try to avoid as many questions knowing i will get called a dumb blonde. heres what the boys in my class say "your so blonde"
Well HERE'S what I finde really peculiar about it; If people get steriotyped in such a manner ( called stupid or whatever ) because of their SKIN color then that's considerd unacceptable ( they call it "racist" ), . .. but if they do this same sort of thing with people on account of HAIR color then it seems to be alright.

great hub! It is absolutly a myth and a stereotype. You know if it wasn't blondes it would be brunettes or red heads. Except red heads are the "ugly step child". haha.
Tayler!
